AYUSH (Ayurvedic, Yoga and Naturopathy, Unani, Siddha, Homeopathy) cover can make alternate treatments accessible and affordable when you need them. However, before we get into AYUSH health insurance cover and why it is important, let us first give you a better understanding of the concept.

Short for Ayurveda, Yoga and Naturopathy, Unani, Siddha, and Homeopathy, it is believed[RKR1] that AYUSH treatments are centuries old. They aim to give patients holistic wellness by combining traditional and modern therapeutic practices.

Not too long ago, the term ‘AYUSH’ would return blank looks. Not many knew what these treatments were, and considered them as unscientific wellness treatments and spa therapies.

AYUSH Treatments Get A Push From The Government

The government of India has taken several steps to develop and bring AYUSH treatments into the mainstay, and introduce them as viable alternatives or supplementary treatments to allopathic care. In 2014, the government of India formed the Ministry for AYUSH. This government body bought in the National Accreditation Board for Hospitals (NABH) to start implementing quality standards for hospitals that provide AYUSH treatments. Over 50 hospitals across the country are accredited and authorised to provide this alternate form of treatment to patients.

AYUSH Treatments and Health Insurance

After the formation of AYUSH ministry, the IRDAI requested insurance companies to include AYUSH cover in their health insurance policies. After this, public and private health insurance providers came together and created a list of 97 treatments, their indicative pricings, accepted protocols and lines of treatment. Today, the best health insurance providers have introduced AYUSH treatment add-ons that you can buy to cover the cost of such treatments.

Important Points to Remember

Keep in mind that the AYUSH health insurance plans usually cover expenses for alternate treatments only if they have been carried out in a government hospital or in any healthcare institute that is recognised by the government of India and/or accredited by Quality Council of India/National Accreditation Board on Health (NABH).

An insurance policy that offers AYUSH cover makes these treatments more accessible and affordable when you need them. So, speak to your insurance provider today and check whether your policy covers such medical expenses or not.
