From politics to films, women are making progress in all walks of life. They are breaking the glass ceiling across sector while managing their homes and families with ease. Women are also considered to be natural caregivers in society. However, in this quest for caring for others women often forget to look after themselves. According to a 2018 National Family Health Survey (NFHS-4) by the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare, only 20 per cent of women between ages 15 and 49 have health coverage. While everyone needs health insurance, every woman—whether she is managing the home or working in an office--definitely needs it. As according to research, women tend to seek more healthcare services than men. So, here are some reasons why it is important for women to have health insurance.

Increasing Mental Illnesses

While mental illnesses have always been in existence, it is only now that people have started acknowledging their existence. With many celebrities such as Deepika Padukone openly talking about fighting depression, several people, especially women, have gotten the courage to discuss their mental illnesses and even seek treatment for them. According to World Health Organization, more women than men are prone to depression. Since depression can also lead to suicide, it is important for patients to seek healthcare services to address mental illnesses.

Increasing Heart-Related Ailments

Heart diseases among women in India are on the rise. According to a study performed between 2014 and 2016, approximately 50 per cent of the women in India are at a risk of heart problems. The matter of the heart is therefore not to be taken lightly. Heart-related illnesses are also expensive to treat, with medical expenses at times running into lakhs. Therefore, managing a heart disease without a health insurance cover can have a huge impact on one’s finances.

Rise In Critical Illnesses

According to World Cancer Report 2014, more women than men in India were diagnosed with cancer. Breast cancer had the most occurrences followed by cervical cancer. It is a known fact that cancer is an expensive disease to treat, and can drain people of their savings completely. There have been instances where people have been forced to sell off their property and even take loans to treat critical illnesses. Having a health insurance policy along with a critical illness cover might reduce your financial burden considerably.

Rise In Maternity Treatment Costs

One of the reasons women seek more healthcare services than men is because they avail themselves of maternity healthcare. With Caesarean section deliveries on the rise in India, maternity treatment costs have increased. After a C-section delivery, a new mother stays in the hospital for three days on an average. This incurs costs upwards of Rs50,000. A health insurance policy helps women and their families manage maternity costs effectively.

Changing Lifestyles

Over the past few years, women have become more prone to diseases such as diabetes, hypertension, polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) due to changing lifestyles. They not only have the responsibility of managing their homes, but also their work and families, which increases the stress factor, thus contributing to the rise in some of these illnesses. Since women have to seek regular healthcare services, it is better to have a health insurance policy as they can manage their finances better.

As women grow older, they also become more prone to diseases such as osteoporosis, arthritis. Management of these diseases at their onset is important as any delay on the part of the patients can worsen their condition. Moreover, since most health insurance policies have a waiting period for pre-existing conditions, women should not delay purchasing health insurance covers. A medical insurance policy will not only help women manage their finances in times of medical emergencies but also help them pay more attention to their health. A healthy woman is truly an empowered woman.
